Reader Challenge ~ Make A Life List

Posted · 19 Comments

You know how you always wanted to do something (or maybe a lot of things) but you just never got around to it or backed down in fear or gave up in frustration or settled because you didn’t think you could have it. And then, at some point, you stepped back and looked at your life and wondered: What happened? and/or How in the heck did I get here?

Well, this post is for you.

It’s about creating the life you’ve always wanted. It’s about writing a list of things you want to have/experience/believe/finish while you’re still alive and then DOING them, checking them off as you go.

I came across this idea at Mighty Girl. While writing down your life goals isn’t anything new, having them all listed in one place, committing to achieving them, and blogging about it is, at least to me. So I took inspiration from Mary Oliver’s fabulous poem, The Summer Day, and asked myself what I’m going to do with my one wild & precious life. I spent a month coming up with my list ~ One Wild Life: A Bunch Of Things I Want To Do While I’m Still Around.

That list makes me feel as excited as a little kid on Christmas morning when I look at it. It makes me feel motivated and passionate and full of possibility. It makes me focused and energized and enthusiastic. That’s what I want for your life, too.

So . . . what I challenge you to do is this:

  1. Write your own life list, fill it with things that will make you happier.
  2. Put down everything YOU ever wanted/dreamed about, even if you don’t know, right now, how it’s even possible. (Hint: not somebody else’s version of your life, let them write their own list. Here are some guidelines from Mighty Girl that may help you.)
  3. Share your list or not, it’s up to you.
  4. Start checking off each thing as you complete it.
  5. Have the life you always wanted.

Some of the best advice that I ever got (from a billionaire, no less) was this: The sum total of your life comes from the choices you make. What you trade your life for is entirely up to you.

So do something nice for yourself & make a life list. It’ll guide you to better choices, more suited to making yourself happy. And stop wasting your life living someone else’s list, there’s just not that kind of time.

So what will you do with your one wild & precious life? Please feel free to share your thoughts & experiences in the comment box below.
