Diet culture tells you that you have to lose weight. Losing weight is an individual decision, your decision. If you want to lose weight and live in a body that feels comfortable to you, that’s nobody’s business but your own.

Please don’t fall into the trap of listening to people around you tell you what you should want for your life or what they want for your life. The moment you do that is the moment you start living for someone else. And you will never build trust with yourself that way. Ever.

Diet culture: the only questions that matter

The only 2 questions you need to ask yourself and answer are these:

  1. What do YOU want?
  2. What matters deeply to YOU?

Those answers are what you need to pursue if you want to trust yourself implicitly. And in order to succeed at anything, including weight loss, you need to trust your own self and your intuition.

How diet culture is detrimental to your well-being

I know there’s been a lot of talk about diet culture. I’ll agree that dieting is completely detrimental to your health and well-being. I did it for over 20 years and it not only made me feel shamed, humiliated, and inadequate, but it also never worked long-term. As soon as I stopped whatever diet I was on, I gained the weight back, usually plus more.

I absolutely agree that dieting and forcing yourself to listen to other people’s rules, guidelines, and/or principles while ignoring yourself in the process is one of the most detrimental things you can do to yourself.

 

The first thing I’ll say about diet culture from having lived it:

Don’t let anyone else tell you that you shouldn’t want to lose weight if you want to. They aren’t living in your body. You are. And if you aren’t comfortable in your own body, then you need to do something about it.

You’re in your body for life. You need to make peace with your body and peace with yourself. The only way to do that is to be honest with yourself about what you really want.

The second thing I’ll say about diet culture from having lived it:

You absolutely can lose weight and keep it off without dieting. You can do it simply by listening to your body and taking action based on what your body is telling you. I’ve lost over 160 pounds that way and kept it off for 9 years and counting simply by paying attention to my body cues.

I just want you to know that wanting to lose weight is okay.

  1. Living in a body that feels comfortable to you is okay.
  2. Having the life you want for yourself is okay.
  3. Being honest with yourself and telling yourself the truth is always, always, always okay and also absolutely necessary.

You need to believe all those things too too and give yourself permission to live them out in your life.

Don’t let diet culture sway your decisions

  • Don’t let anyone else tell you what you want for your life, including what kind of body you want.
  • Don’t let anyone else tell you what you should or should not do with your life, including what kind of body you should live in.

Listening to others at the expense of yourself is one of the most disempowering things you can ever do to yourself. To lose the weight naturally and keep it off, you need to empower yourself and you need to trust yourself.

The way to do both those things is to be honest with yourself always, and that includes about your desire to lose weight.
