Feelings of powerlessness often happen because of some kind of physical, mental, verbal, and/or sexual abuse. They happen when your personal boundaries get violated and you donāt defend yourself for whatever reason.

Abusing food can give you a feeling of power and control early on. You can use it to give yourself a kind of high. Or use it to comfort or numb yourself. You can abuse it to give yourself a sense of courage over your fears. Or value when you doubt your self-worth.
You can overeat to create a wall of flesh around yourself that you hope will keep you from getting hurt again. You can starve because thatās the only way you know how to show you have power over something in your life, even something as small as food. You can throw up everything you eat because maybe you tell yourself that you canāt control who violates your boundaries, but you can control what stays in your body and what doesnāt.
Abusing food only gives you the illusion of control
The thing is, abusing food just gives you the illusion of control. It might feel real, but it isnāt real. Life still happens to you without asking your permission first.
You can still get hurt, abused, and violated even while youāre trying to use food to protect yourself. Being overweight wonāt keep anyone from treating you how theyāre going to treat you. Starving wonāt stop someone from crossing the line again. Vomiting wonāt make anyone think twice about doing what they want to do to you. Overeating wonāt keep you safe.

Authentic power is being able to take care of yourself no matter what happens, no matter what anybody says or does, no matter your circumstances, no matter what events transpire in your life.
Your power, along with your body, are the only two things you ever have. The only way to get your power back is to take it. So take it back.
You take your power back by making different choices. Nothing makes you feel powerless faster than telling yourself you have no choices. You always have choices. Maybe you donāt have any great choices. Maybe the choices throw you clean out of your comfort zone or fill you with fear.
You need to believe deep down in your bones that you are not stuck. You are not powerless because you have choices as to what youāre going to believe, what youāll allow in your life and what you won’t, what you do with your time, and the list goes on.
