To have effective and permanent weight loss results, you need to stop being afraid of food. I know this because I used to be afraid of food. For decades, I was afraid to eat sugar or flour because I was told by somebody in authority that it was a trigger. Just like a gun, you know, pull that trigger and there’s no going back and there’s me completely out of control again. I wholeheartedly believed them because I thought they knew more than I did and so I believed that once I got triggered, I had no control over my body or my mind.

I was afraid to be in the same house with cookies and candy and any kind of sweets because I believed that I just couldn’t help myself, that I would have to eat them because they were simply there.

I was afraid to eat anything or be around food because I believed I was helpless against this immense pull that food had on me and powerless to resist it and that I would end up bingeing if I even had just one bite.

I also believed that I just couldn’t stop myself because food had all the power and I had none. But food only has the power you give it.

To stop being afraid of food right now, know that food is just an object

Now I’m not afraid of food at all because I know that food is just an object. Food is just a thing that goes where you tell it to go.

Food has no emotional component at all except for what you give it. Food doesn’t feel happy or sad or angry or frustrated. Food isn’t in charge of how you feel either. Whatever feelings you’re giving to food are simply your choice, and you can always choose differently.

Food has no power either except for what you give it. It can’t make you do anything. It can’t order you around. It can’t make you feel less than. It can’t make you eat it. It can’t give you strength or courage or a belief in yourself or anything else you might think it can do.

Food simply has no connotations at all except for what you give it. So if you aren’t happy with your relationship with food then, I say kindly, change what power you give it.

 

 

To stop being afraid of food right now, remember you always have choices

Whatever you do with your life is your choice. Sure, it’s true that sometimes you don’t have great choices, but you always have choices. And it’s your job to make the best choices you can for yourself with the information you have available to you at the time.

You get to choose what you put in your body and when and how much. Unless someone is force-feeding you, that’s a choice that’s always squarely up to you.

You also get to choose what you give you power to:

  • Will you give your power to somebody else?
  • Or to a substance like food?
  • Or to a behavior like an eating disorder?
  • Or to anything else?

Your power, along with your body are the only two things you ever truly have. Do yourself a kindness and don’t give control of either one of them to anyone or anything else.

To stop being afraid of food right now, choose to be powerful

At any given moment, you can choose to be powerful or you can choose to be powerless. Thing is, you can’t be both at the same time. So you have to choose.

If you choose powerless, then you choose to sit around and wait for somebody else to come fix it or maybe you slide into self-pity or perhaps you get to playing the victim. And all those things will do is stick you fast and keep you stuck for as long as you believe you’re powerless.

If you believe you’re powerless against food then you keep yourself stuck in a cycle where you believe food has all the control and you have none.

But if you choose to be powerful, then you make different choices, ones that are the best for you so you can move forward with your life.

If you believe you have power over food then you decide what foods go into your body and how much and when on your own terms. If you believe you have power over food then you no longer live in fear of food.

To stop being afraid of food right now, take your power back

The only way to get your power back is to take it. So take it back.

If you’ve given your power to someone else or to something else, including food, you can take it back anytime you choose to.

You might tell yourself you’re stuck. You might believe that wholeheartedly. You might live out the story that you are helpless and at the mercy of whatever is around you. You might even argue against your ability to be in control of your own life.

But here’s the truth: you are powerful because you are the authority in your own life and you get to choose how you want to live it. So choose to only give food the only power it has, which is fuel for your body and that’s it.
